Police Department Updates

AS OF THURSDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2023

  • The Police Department received training in November on human and child sex trafficking. The training was conducted by Training Commander Mick Reddick.

  • The police department invited Dr. Sandy Washburn to train officers on how to handle situations involving children using a QR code she created.

  • The Nashville Police Department recently hosted a student from Brown County High School, inviting her to spend the day with officers and enjoy lunch together. During her visit, the officers shared their experiences and offered guidance on how she could pursue a career in law enforcement. This was an incredible opportunity for the police department to connect with the youth and inspire them towards a positive path in life.

  • The police department provided 10 hours of community service as a requirement for juvenile probation.

  • The Nashville Police Department would like to extend warm wishes to everyone for a wonderful holiday season. We are grateful for all the support we received in 2023. Additionally, we would like to wish Jane Gore, the President of the Nashville Town Council, all the best for her future endeavors. It has been an honor working with Jane over the past few years, and we appreciate all the support she has provided to our department.

AS OF THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2023

  • There have been 10 juvenile community service hours.

  • There was a collaborative meeting with the Nashville Town Council and the Police Merit Board.

  • The Vevay Police Department visited and shadowed the Nashville Police Department to observe their operations, with Chief Woods and Sergeant Amy in attendance.

  • Training Commander Mick Reddick conducted monthly training on building clearance.

  • Officers distributed candy from the police department during a successful Halloween trick-or-treating event from 5–7 p.m.

  • Officers navigated the safety of the Halloween parade with traffic safety.

  • Chief Burris collaborated with Habitat for Humanity to construct a home in the local area.

  • Officers attended the career day at Brown County High School, establishing a relationship to bring students to the police department for career interests.

  • Chief Burris has been invited to participate in an International Panel in Columbus, where International Chaplains of Police will discuss how chaplains can provide support to "Women in Law Enforcement." There is an event scheduled in Eventbrite that features a photo of Chief Burris along with a brief bio.

AS OF THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2023

  • Nashville Metropolitan Police Department participated in the Homecoming Block Party for the Brown County High School. Officers had a duck game and gave away prizes to the kids.

  • Commander Mick Reddick put a Defense Tactics training on for the Nashville Police Department—compliments of the Brown County Athletic Director. Nashville Police Department was allowed to use the wrestling room at the high school.

  • Officer Jessica Bolin has volunteered to help with the Facebook management.

  • Officer Jessica Bolin is making Nashville Police Department t-shirts for a citizen in the community who reached out to support the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department.

  • The Nashville Metropolitan Police Department worked with a juvenile, giving 12 community service hours for retribution through the courts and juvenile probation.

    • Cleaning around the outside of the police department,

    • the outside of the Town Hall exterior (with the help of the town administration), and

    • cleaned the town car.

  • Chief Burris participated in “Cop on a Train” with the Brown County EMA Director, Chad Jenkins. The train departed from downtown Indianapolis, traveled through Brown County, and ended in Bloomington. The purpose of this training was to bring awareness to the dangers on the railroads and to educate law enforcement on the specific laws set by Indiana for trespassing on railroads.

AS OF THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2023

  • The Narcan Box is out front, and Andi and Carl Wilson helped place that and donated the wood to place it on. There are 3 doses in the box, and are refilled as they are taken out of the box.

  • Working on an officer schedule model to make the most coverage on the weekends. We currently have an officer working every weekend right now, Officer Heath Young has volunteered to work the next several weekends through the main tourist time while we work on a model for the future.

  • A huge thank you again to the National Night Out sponsors and the National Night Out volunteers. Thank you to John Elliot, who made all the first responders’ pictures and placed them in picture frames. Checks for the public safety participants. $250.00

  • Police, Fire, and Dispatchers. The local Girl Scouts, leader Kelly, reached out and wanted to do something for the officers. The Girl Scout troop is going to make dog treats for officers to have in their cars as another way to connect with the community.

  • The Nashville Police Department wrote a letter of support for the Hope For Hearts Farm in Brown County to help them get a grant to do activities with public safety in Brown County.

  • Chief Heather Burris was placed on the Brown County Ambassador Board for the Brown County Schools and attended a two-day leadership class put on by IUPD in Bloomington. The training was sponsored by the south region FBI office in Bloomington.

  • The Nashville Police Department attended the Overdose awareness day at the Village Green. Thank you to everyone who donated and signed the poster for Deputy Tim True. We were able to give Deputy Tim True and his family a little bit to help with food and transportation for a few days.

  • The Nashville Police Department endorsed a request through the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy for Officer Jessica Bolin to take her physical agility test.

  • Bob and Cody Hickle came to stay in Brown County for a weekend in August while they attended a show in Bloomington. Officers and Cody were able to catch up and have lunch.

  • October 10, 2023, at 5 p.m. at the Nashville Police Department for an executive meeting.

AS OF THURSDAY, JULY 20, 2023

  • Officer Heath Young became a qualified expert at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy using his department-issued weapon.

  • Lieutenant Mike Horn trained all officers on the new Taser 7.

  • The Nashville Police Department welcomed Reserve Officer Doug Johnson on board. Officer Johnson underwent Field Training Officer (FTO) training under the guidance of Lieutenant Mike Horn to get familiar with the Nashville Police Department and the town.

  • On July 14, 2023, Chief Heather Burris successfully completed Session 5 of the National Command Course. She will provide a comprehensive update at the August 2023 council meeting.

  • During June training, Training Commander Mick Reddick invited a motorcycle expert to speak to the officers about the various laws in Indiana.

AS OF THURSDAY, MAY 18, 2023

  • Lieutenant Mike Horn and Training Commander Mick Reddick completed the second part of training in the trainer for bomb school.

  • Officer Dylan Smock and Chief Heather Burris attended PIO (Public Information Officer) conference hosted by the Evansville Police Department, which was sponsored by the Flock Camera system.

  • Training Commander Mick Reddick attended the Human Trafficking training in Hancock County, which was free to the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department.

  • Lieutenant Mike Horn attended tazer training as an instructor. On May 31, 2023, Lieutenant Mike Horn will train officers with the NMPD to certify the Department to carry the new Tazer 7.

  • Officer Scott Bowling has been working to fill the department schedule.

  • The community clean-up in April was very successful. A majority of the heat rock was removed from the Department’s flower beds.

  • A National Night Out Committee has been established.

  • Officers will participate in the dunk tank at the 2023 4-H Fair to support the 4-twelve youth group in efforts to raise money for their cause.

  • Cody Hinkle and Bob Hinkle from Fort Wayne visited Nashville for the Spring Blossom parade. The Brown County Democrat wrote an article for Cody to have as a keepsake from our police department and the community.

  • On Memorial Day, officers are assisting for the VFW for a moment of silence to the dedication of our armed forces.
